The zoo would round them up again with traps and they'd escape the next year and the cycle would continue.
That was until they made an epic escape managing to get into the buffalo pens (very large) unseen and from there tunneled to the neighboring park and uncharacteristically all emptied into the park.
They went wild digging up new burrows and standing atop them barking like mad. It was a popular park for elementary school students to go visit on field trips so it was full of prairie dogs digging like mad, barking, and being chased by kids.
Several made their way across the road to the nearby houses where they gorged their way thru every visible garden / flower bed. Some victoriously claiming the yard as their own proudly parched atop a new mound littered with the leftovers from the flowers and garden foods that they couldn't manage to hork down.
A year later the zoo got a big new pen, with prairie dog proof base.... or so they think.____
