And, surprisingly, it wasn't.
I had done DK classes at this school last year. Those of you who read my other nick may remember me bitching about a class of kids who are really bad and in an after-school program for kids that, well, were bad. It was a frustrating class and I was glad it was over. Two of the kids in the classroom today were in my class last year.
Again, surprisingly, they were fine,
Most of the day was spent following what they did and working individually with this kid or that one on whatever they were struggling with. I FINALLY learned how to play the card game UNO (I swear, I never knew how to until today). I won the first game - the kids didn't believe I had never played before. (lost the second game). I taught a 4th grader 1st grade math. He's a sweet kid but not so bright.
We went out for recess; we got the playground to ourselves. Lunchtime these kids eat by themselves, too. I guess the special needs kids aren't allowed to be integrated? Dunno. Some came and went through the day as they went to their "specials" with their regular homeroom (art, gym, etc). I got to swing on the swings. I recommend it if you haven't done it in a while.
School got out at 3 and I walked home. I would love to get a job at this school for so many reasons, but the commute is the biggest plus - 12 min walk from my house. It's also a extremely diverse school; only 5%(ish) are considered "white" students. All the rest are from different backgrounds, countries, etc. I dig that kind of group dynamic.
Anyway, back for day 2 tomorrow. The teacher will be back on Thursday, so no subbing for me. Which is fine, since I have a lunch date anyway with a professor from the University Theater Dept. Not a "date-Date", just meeting him to make the contact. Who knows; maybe there's a job at the university. And if not, good to have contacts there anyway.
Will report back on subbing as things are interesting - or not.
Peace out.
