Print Story Portrait of an ex-coworker

One of the few things I miss from the old corpse job was working with a handful of highly talented people.

So the funny thing doing this was that she's an excellent animator/illustrator. Our styles are very different, but when she draws something it always looks professional and perfect - nothing looks wrong (like the poorly drawn hand does in this drawning.)

I still have a hard time getting a drawing really right; there's always something that's just not quite working.

I pretty much only work with highly talented people now... I just miss those who didn't come with us.

Awesome face and hair again! But I think the glasses are my favorite (and the raised brow). Good hand and cigar too.

So, can I get her number?

Good hand -- despite what you say. by greyrat (4.00 / 2) #3 Tue Nov 21, 2006 at 01:03:20 PM EST
I think you need to accept that you are a 'regional' portraitist. This, to me, is what's making your work look 'not quite right'. They're caricatures because you get each set of details right but the details don't all fit together quite right. I think that's what's appealing to me about your style.</soapbox>

the hand by LilFlightTest (2.00 / 0) #11 Tue Nov 21, 2006 at 04:57:09 PM EST
i'm not too sure about that part...it took me a minute to realise that was a cigar and not some weird mutation.

Your drawings are improving with each new one by cam (4.00 / 2) #5 Tue Nov 21, 2006 at 01:20:40 PM EST
I like the sunglass effect you did there. The hair looks good too with my eyes filling in the blank white space to give it body. Good stuff.

Glasses by spacejack (4.00 / 2) #7 Tue Nov 21, 2006 at 01:31:25 PM EST
I was trying to figure out how to draw the dark glasses and still include her eyes. Then it struck me that it might work if I drew her face as outlines, but the part inside the glasses as high-contrast.

In my defense... by spacejack (4.00 / 1) #12 Tue Nov 21, 2006 at 08:34:25 PM EST
the hand is closest to the viewer. If you think about it like that while squinting, then it doesn't look quite as weird.

I particularly like the implied outline around the outer rim of the glasses.

As you've said the hand and doesn't quite seem to sit quite right in the picture, I think the thumb especially doesn't seem be quite located correctly and makes the hand look wrong in 3d. Possibly the little finger could do with more of a hint of a knuckle.
