So get yer combat boots on and post your submissions.

My entry is coming along slowly. I made a recording with my band last weekend, but it was slightly marred by my screwing up and forgetting how to sing during the final chorus. Oh, and it didn't have a tune. And I didn't know how to play it.

Still, it was a good recording, otherwise.

Now I'm working on things like MELODY. Seems to be better than NO MELODY.

I also just bought a microphone and mic preamp, so no more messing with tin cans and twine to record vocals.

I actually sang on mine by Bob Abooey (2.00 / 0) #1 Fri Aug 11, 2006 at 02:28:02 PM EST
And while it wasn't the worst vocals I've ever heard I decided to can them and just go with an instrumental.

I think with the proper EQing and compression I could have made them work but I don't have the time to futz with it. Maybe next time.

To make up for the lack of vocals I did a key change mid-song, in an effort to retain the listeners attention. Yep, me and Coltrane.

Warmest regards,
--Your best pal Bob

my voice on them, then you should not be squemish about vocalising on a song.

HA! by Bob Abooey (2.00 / 0) #6 Fri Aug 11, 2006 at 03:04:14 PM EST
Easy for you to say.

Actually part of the reason is I've no confidence in my vocals, which you can tell when you play them back.

Plus my voice is bad and off key, but that said, with a little practise using compression and EQ I think I may debut them in MFC VIII.

Warmest regards,

If I ever get my mixer hooked up by skippy (2.00 / 0) #8 Fri Aug 11, 2006 at 04:31:50 PM EST
I can always record some guest vocals for you, no charge.  You know, assuming you want some random intarweb nerd singing for you.

One thing I have is Confidence in my mediocre singing ability.  Plus doing a whole MFC by myself is a tad daunting at this point in time.

If you can even sing a little that's more than I have now. Bonus points if you know of some hot Diva's who can sing backup.

I was watching the Pink Floyd Pulse DVD and sure enough, they have a couple of the sisters singing backup vocals. Quite brilliantly too, I might add. I'm convinced that's the key to making it big in the music business.

tricks for covering up bad singing voices by cam (2.00 / 0) #12 Fri Aug 11, 2006 at 08:24:46 PM EST
a-la SHMRB. Record the vocals twice and pan one track left and the other right. I sometimes run them both down the centre, it thickens it up and makes any atonal 'moments' get drowned out by the other track.

Echo and reverb are your friends. Put shitloads of that on a single line and most atrocities are covered up in a shimmering and phasing.

I did two tracks for the soprano line, both octave shifted, and it actually sounds rather nice.
